What makes a good prompt set
Phrase prompts the way a real buyer would type them, not the way your marketing site would. A good set covers three angles:- Category queries (“best [category] for [use case]”) are the questions buyers ask when they don’t yet have a vendor in mind.
- Problem-framed queries (“how do I [solve problem] without [pain point]”) surface the answers AI gives at the earliest stage of buyer awareness.
- Comparison queries (“X vs Y for Z” or “alternatives to [competitor]”) show where AI positions you relative to competitors.
Every active prompt counts against your plan’s tracked-prompt allowance, measured org-wide. Start focused: 30-50 well-chosen prompts produce cleaner signals than 200 unfocused ones. See Plans for your limit.
Prompt lifecycle: Active, Suggested, Archived
Every prompt is in one of three states, shown as tabs on the Prompts page:- Active: runs daily against your enabled surfaces and consumes prompt allowance.
- Suggested: saved as a draft, not yet crawled. You can review and activate any suggested prompt without it counting toward your allowance until you do.
- Archived: removed from crawling and from most metric views, but kept for reference.
Adding prompts
1
One at a time
From the Prompts page, click New prompt. Type one prompt per line in the text area; you can paste multiple at once. Prompts must be 200 characters or fewer, up to 100 per batch. Exact duplicates within the project are automatically skipped and flagged.
2
CSV upload
Click CSV upload on the Prompts page. Paste or upload a file with two columns:
text and country_code. The page previews the parsed rows (up to 20 rows shown) before you confirm. Duplicate prompts are skipped and the count is reported after import.3
Suggestions from Mavel
The onboarding wizard seeds an initial prompt list from your website and project profile. After onboarding, the Suggested tab surfaces new prompt ideas generated from the same profile. Click Suggest more to request a fresh round. You can also paste a list of keywords (up to 50) using Import prompts; Mavel generates prompt variants around each keyword and adds them as suggestions for you to review.
Intent tagging
After a prompt is created, Mavel’s intent classifier runs automatically and tags it with one of two intent types:
Separately from the intent type, each prompt is classified as branded or non-branded (whether the query mentions a brand by name). These labels appear on prompts alongside any tags you’ve applied manually. You can filter by both dimensions in the dashboard to compare branded vs. unbranded performance; a large gap between the two is one of the clearest signals in GEO analysis.
